Follow these four simple steps:

Step 1: Book a free online consultation

  • To help you choose the right course, you need to book a consultation meeting with us before you register.
  • To book your consultation, please choose: Portugal Online, and then choose a suitable time and date.
  • The consultation and the Online Level Check are both free. The Level Assessment Test is always done online.
  • Note: the result of the test will be provided during the consultation with one of our advisors.

You do not need to do the placement and online level check if:

  • you are only interested in 100% online courses. Find out more on our 100% English Online page
  • you have already done the placement test within the past six months.

Step 2: Do the short online level check

  • If you can't do the test immediately, we will send you a personalised unique link to the online level check.
  • Our online level check has 30 multiple-choice questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete it.
  • You will need to complete the level check before the day of your consultation. It is essential in helping us all to choose the right course. 

Step 3: Attend your consultation

  • During your interview, one of our expert advisors will talk to you about the results of your online level check and find the right course for you. The consultation will take between 10 and 20 minutes.

Step 4: Register

  • After your consultation, you will receive all the information you need to complete and pay for your registration.
  • You must be 18 years old to be able to pay and register for the course.

The Online Level Check (OLC) and the Student Portal: FAQs

Q1. What is the Online Level Check?

The Online Level Check (OLC) was developed by the British Council to describe the level of your English.

It consists of 

  1. an online booking system which lets you choose the best time and date for your Meeting, and
  2. Our Online Level Check test. The test results are used to suggest the best class for you

Q2. What is the Student Portal?

The Student Portal is an online platform that allows you to manage various aspects of your registration with us. 

You can, for example, create a Parent or Student account, or solve a number of Registration problems, like lost passwords, and see information about your student history.

Q3. What if I forget my username and/or Password?

Your username is the ID number which we sent you in the email confirming your original Booking.

You can manage or reset your password through the Student Portal.

If you have any problems, you should contact Customer Support, who can reset them.

Q4. I want to change the date or time of my Online or Face-to-face Consultation

You can do this through the Student Portal

Q5. How many times can I change the date or time of my Consultation?

As often as you want. New details will be sent to you. If you change your mind again while waiting for the details to arrive, we will send new instructions, and the older one will be cancelled.

Q6. I want to change my Online Consultation to Face-to-face (or vice versa)

You can do this through the Student Portal 

Q7. After I make a Booking, how long does it take to get the email with my link to take the placement test?

It normally takes approximately one hour.

Note: If you ask our Support Team to make a change to your schedule you will not revive an emailed confirmation.

Q8. I have waited but I have not received the email with my link to take the Placement Test. What should I do?

You should contact our Customer Support Team. who will send you a new link to a Test.

Q9. I took the Test, but I missed the Meeting. What should I do?

You should contact our Customer Support Team, who will make you a new appointment. 

Note that in this case you will not receive an automatic confirmation email. 

Q10. I missed the Test and the Meeting. What should I do?

You should contact our Customer Support Team, who will make you a new appointment. 

Note that in this case you will not receive an automatic confirmation email. 

They will also send you a new link to a Test.

Q11. I will be near the British Council today. Can I come in and have a Test and Meeting without an appointment?

You will need to confirm availability with our local Customer Support Team. If there is a spare appointment available, they will find you a computer where you can access your email and take the placement test via a link we will send you.

Q12. While I was doing the Test, II had a technical problem, so I couldn't finish it. What should I do?

Tell our Customer Support Team who will send you an email with a link to another test.

Q13. I was waiting for my online meeting, but when, at the right time, I clicked on the link you sent me, there was no one there to respond. What should I do?

Please wait for ten minutes. If no one has responded by then, please contact our Customer Support Team.

Q14. I have had a few problems and now I am a bit late for my Online Meeting. Can I still attend it?

There is a ten-minute tolerance for Online Meetings. After that, you will have to make a new Booking online.
